Hiking - Gran Senda de Malaga

Next to Cortijo Pulgarín Bajo, two of the stages of the Gran Senda de Málaga begin, the one that heads towards Alfarnate and the one that leads to Periana.

These two routes, 13 and 16 kilometres respectively, allow you to get to know the natural surroundings, go through olive groves and see the spectacular landscapes of the Doña Ana, Gomer and Fraile gorges or the Vilo Peak, as well as enjoying the views of the Viñuela reservoir or the imposing Maroma, the highest peak in the province of Malaga.

Gastronomy

To discover the typical gastronomy of the area, 10 minutes from the Cortijo, you will find restaurants such as Los Pirineos, in Alfarnatejo, or the well-known Venta de Alfarnate, considered the oldest in Andalusia (13th century). In addition, near the reservoir of La Viñuela you can also visit the restaurant of Camping La Viñuela.

And to enjoy the best Extra Virgin Olive Oil, you can visit Aceites Mondrón, in the neighbouring town of Periana, where the olives from the centenary olive trees of the area are milled and where you can buy oils of extraordinary quality that have won awards at international competitions.

La Vinuela reservoir and Sabar River

20 minutes from Cortijo Pulgarín Bajo, at the La Viñuela reservoir you can enjoy the magnificent views and take part in a variety of activities, including sailing and windsurfing courses, kayaking and canoeing, and workshops for groups.

And from the Cortijo you can contemplate the course of the river Sábar, which flows between imposing cliffs that form waterfalls and pools where it is possible to swim.

Cultural visits and Museums

In Alfarnatejo, near the Tajo de Gómer, you can see the ruins of the old Moorish castle, while in the gorge of the river Sábar, Neolithic remains have been found that date back some 5,000 years.

In addition, in the Tajos de Vilo, the Pela Horá cave, the Chamizo caves and the Morronquera cave or the Cortijo de la Cueva shelter there are pictorial remains from the Palaeolithic to the Chalcolithic periods.

One of the most outstanding monuments in the area is the Church of Santo Cristo de Cabrilla, in Alfarnatejo, from the 18th century. In addition, in the area you can visit museums such as the Museum of Antique Toys in Alfarnate, the Ethnographic Museum in Riogordo or the Museum of Honey in Colmenar.

Active tourism
